Troubetskoy was commissioned by Sara Delano Roosevelt, the President's mother, to paint this sensitive portrait when Roosevelt resumed his political career after contracting polio. Roosevelt is shown, seated, gazing directly at the viewer, holding a book in one hand. Troubetzkoy also painted portraits of John A. Roosevelt, age 11, another of FDR, age 12, and one of Sara Delano Roosevelt, which hangs today in the dining room of Springwood.
