Images of the Emaciated Buddha are very rare in Thai bronze sculpture and are modeled after Gandharan prototypes; compare to another example from the Nitta Group Collection, in The Crucible of Compassion and Wisdom, 1987, plate 53.
When Prince Siddharta renounced all worldly possessions, he meditated and endured many hardships in order to attain enlightenment. During a period of time he allowed himself only one grain of rice per day in order to purify his body and rid himself of worldly temptations. Reaching near starvation he realized the need of the middle path excercising moderation and reached enlightenment shortly thereafter.
