Lot Essay
This pair of armchairs were inspired by the famous set of 12 chairs, part of a suite of furniture executed by Andrea Brustolon (1662-1732) for the galleria in Pietro Venier's Palazzo in San Vio and bequeathed to the city of Venice in 1838 by Count Gerolamo Contarini. Other chairs in the suite are decorated with blackamoors, putti, amorini, mythological beasts, fauns and naturalistically carved branches. One chair is almost entirely carved with corn cobs. A chair in the Ca' Rezzonico, with closely related details provided the model for this pair. Although closely resembling the work of Andrea Brustolon, the chair is no longer attributed to the Master (see C. Alberici, il Mobile Veneto, Milan, 1980, p. 180, fig. 241).
