Early French airships, balloons and composites
A rare collection of press and other photographic images, circa 1906-1930, illustrating the development of the distinctive French design and construction of rigid and non-rigid airships, balloons and composite aircraft-airship. Airships include Republique, Le Fleurus, Zodiac, 'Le mixte Santos Dumont', Conté, Ville de Paris, the dirigible E9, Dupuy de Loine, de la Vaulx, Astra, Liberte, La Patrie, Clément-Bayard and others. Some images show various of these airships flying over Paris, with contemporary street scenes, and others of military manoeuvres with aircraft, cavalry, infantrymen on manoeuvres and other occupations (60 approx. contained in a ringbinder)

Lot Essay

French airship development, compared with that of Germany, may be described as producing some very distinctive and sometimes bizarre designs. At the time, many were at the forefront of the development of powered non-rigid airships, as witnessed by the interesting variation in design shown in this lot.
