A Fine And Rare German Gothic Back-Plate
Late 15th Century
The back-plate proper of five plates, the top one covering the upper part of the back, with armholes and a 'V'-shaped cut-out at the top, the latter filled by a small internal riveted plate, the lower edge cut to a cusped flattened inverted 'V' shape, linked by two narrow downward-lapping plates of similar design to a shaped waist-plate with flanged lower edge carrying a pointed culet of three upward-lapping plates with cusped upper edges, with a central gore-shaped arrangement of flutes joining two pairs of double flutes radiating across the back, the armholes and bottom edge bordered by double flutes, all but the neck-plate articulated on rivets
