A Fine Pair Of German Gothic Tassets
Attributed to Lorenz Helmschmid of Augsburg, late 15th Century
Each forged from a single plate concave towards the wearer and tapering slightly towards the bottom, the top edge shaped to a series of flat cusps, the inner edge concave, bordered by a flat turn, and drawn out at the top to form a truncated triangular point, that on the left scalloped, engraved with a series of diagonal lines with dots at each end within a scalloped line, and designed to overlap that on the right, the bottom edge convex and bordered by two narrow flutes, the surface divided by a pair of diagonal flutes into two triangular panels, the inner one plain, and the outer one filled with a series of parallel curved diagonal flutes, riveted at the top a pair of latten buckles (one tongue missing), the interior painted red
