Lot Essay

The form of this chair, with padded arms terminating in volutes and hollowed seat-rail enriched with pateraed tablets relates to bergère chairs at Althorp, Northamptonshire and Chatsworth, Derbyshire which are attributed to the French-born chair-maker François Hervé (d.1796). A pair of bergères from Chatsworth was sold by the Trustees of the Chatsworth Settlement, in these Rooms, 23 June 1983, lot 62. A related set of four 'large birjairs' at Hatfield House may be those listed in the Drawing Room in 1781, and are now attributed to Messrs. Samuel Beckwith and Edward France, upholsterers and cabinet-makers to King George III, (sold in these Rooms, 4 May 1950, lot 95; see also A. Coleridge, 'English Furniture and Cabinet-makers at Hatfield House - II, Burlington Magazine, April 1967, pp. 202.)
