A fine 18th-Century Butterfield-pattern silver compass sundial,
signed on the underside N. BION A PARIS, the horizon plate engraved with hours IIII-XII, I-VIII pour 50 degrez, 5-12, 1-7 for 45° and 5-12, 1-7 for 40°, with central engraved rose, the compass with glazed cover, blued steel needle and the base engraved NORT, EST, SUD and OUEST, the folding latitude arc engraved with foliate decoration and a scale 40°-60° to be read against by an index in the form of a bird with upraised beak, the underside with decoratively engraved rose on the underside of the compass box and the names and latitudes of twenty-two continental cities and towns, and signature -- 2 3/8in. (6cm.) long
