A fine early 17th-Century Nuremburg ivory diptych sundial,
signed CONRAD KARNER and dated 1622;
FACE Ia upper leaf, outer face: thirty-two point wind-rose with scale calibrated 1-32 and 16 cardinal points labelled, the gilt-brass index with stylised hand pointer, the surround with engraved decoration in the form of vegetables and flowers, with four gilt-brass spandrels and two hooks;
FACE Ib upper leaf, inner face: two pin gnomon dials, one for DIE TAG LING with a scale 8-16 and figures for the houses of the Zodiac, the other for DIE PLANETEN STVNDT with scale 1-12, with foliate decoration and the names and latitudes of fifty-four continental cities and towns, signature and date, and string gnomon positions for 39°, 42°, 45°, 48° and 51°;
FACE IIa lower leaf, inner face: glazed compass bowl with brass-capped blued-iron needle, the base engraved with winds SEPT, ORIE, MERI and OCCI and the maker's mark for Karner in the form of a horn with suspension cord (x2), the surround graduated in hours 4-12, 1-8 for latitudes 39°, 42°, 45°, 48° and 51°, further with two horizontal gilt pin gnomon dials, for Babylonian and Italian hours, floral and foliate decoration and two brass hooks, the side with recess for wind vane (cover and wind vane missing);
FACE IIb lower leaf, outer face: gilt-brass volvelle with index, showing the hours 1-12 (x2), pierced to show man-in-the-moon as it revolves, reading off seven various hour and calendar scales, including those for the Julian and Gregorian epacts for 1622, with green and red vegetal and floral decoration and gilt-brass spandrels -- 5½in. (14cm.) long
