A 17th-Century ivory diptych sundial,
signed LEONHART MILLER NORNBERGA and dated SOLI DEO GLORIA 1638;
FACE Ia, upper leaf, outer face: the central wind rose with sixteen points of the compass marked, graduations for the days of the month 1-32 and the names of eight winds in Latin, with brass index in the form of an arrow, surrounded by engraved decoration in green and brown depicting the faces of four winds blowing towards the centre of the rose, clouds and stars, with viewing hole for compass, four brass bun feet and two brass hooks;
FACE Ib, upper leaf, inner face: pin gnomon dial labelled QUANTITAS DIEI with the mean hours shown in red VII-XII, I-V and the Bohemian hours shown in black 8-16, each with a figurative depiction for a house of the Zodiac, the left side labelled SIGNA DESCENDENTA, the right side labelled SIGNA ASCENDENTA, a small vignette beneath in green and brown of two village houses and a table of twenty-eight continental cities and towns with latitudes, the signature at the base, settings for the string gnomon labelled for latitudes 42°, 45°, 48°, 51° and 58°, and with two brass eyes;
FACE IIa, lower leaf, inner face: the compass box with glazed cover, rope-twist brass retaining ring, blued-iron needle and brass cap, the base engraved with SEPT, ORIE, MERI, OCCI, four stylised wind figures blowing towards the centre, a North arrow and the maker's mark for Miller, surrounded by the hour scales for the five latitude settings, graduated 4-12, 1-8, and the legend with date, a second pin gnomon dial entitled HORAE AB OTRV ET OCCASV SOLIS with the double hour scales in red and black 1-14 and 10-23 with figures for the houses of the Zodiac, with engraved decoration in the form of brown flowers with green foliage and a sun face;
FACE IIb, lower leaf, outer face: the rotating gilt-brass volvelle with hour graduations 1-12 (x2) and an index to read off the scale of hours 1-12 (x2) and days 1-29, also with pictures and descriptions for four phases of the moon DER NEV MON, DAS ERST VIERTEL, DER VOL MON and DAS LETZ VIERTEL, the surround decorated with red and green vegetation and foliage, with four brass bun feet and one hook (one missing) and brass clip for wind vane recess (wind vane missing) -- 4½in. (11.5cm.) long
