An unusual early 18th-Century [?]Spanish gilt- and silvered-brass equinoctial compass sundial,
unsigned, the silvered hour ring in square frame graduated I-XII (x2) with gilt-brass folding gnomon, the folding latitude arc of gilt-brass and graduated 0°-90° with 5° divisions, the compass set in a square case, with glazed cover and blued-iron needle with brass cap, the base inscribed in cursive script with eight compass points in French, the underside of the case engraved with the names and latitudes of twenty-two continental cities and towns, the case with suspension loop and square lid with a catch and engraved on the outside with the latitudes of a further twenty-six cities and towns -- 1¾in. (4.5cm.) wide
