A fine 18th-Century gilt-brass Augsburg-pattern sundial,
signed on the underside of the compass box J.G. Vogler, the hour ring with sprung gnomon and engraved on the upper surface with NORD, OST, SU and WEST and initials for a further twelve points of the compass, engraved on the innner surface with an hour scale 4-12, 1-8, with separate pierced and foliate decorated wind vane to fit over the gnomon, the folding latitude arc graduated 10°-90°, the folding plummet support pierced and with foliate decoration, the horizontal plate with engraved foliate decoration, the silvered compass box with glazed cover, blued-steel needle and brass cap, the base engraved with the winds SEPT, ORIE, MERI, OCCI and a central wind rose, the underside of the compass box with an engraved table of eighteen continental cities and towns with latitudes, with Eleva Poli above and signature beneath, contained in the original pale blue cloth-lined octagonal leather-covered case with brass hook and eye (lid detached) -- 3 3/8in.
