A fine 18th-Century brass and gilt-brass Augsburg-pattern equinoctial compass sundial,
unsigned, the hour ring graduated III-XII, I-IX on the upper surface, and 3-12, 1-9 on the inner surface, with sprung gnomon, the latitude arc with graduations for 6°-90°, the gilt plummet support pierced and foliate decorated, with brass plummet (suspension hook defective), the horizontal plate gilded and with foliate engraved decoration, the silvered compass with glazed cover (cracked), blued-steel needle and brass cap, central wind rose and markings for eight points of the compass, also with a second gilded index in the form of an arrow arranged to read off a scale of degrees divided in four quadrants and turned by means of a winged nub on the underside, the underside of the compass case with gilt cover with central engraved rose and cut out section graduated with the seven planetary symbols arranged to read against the calendar scale beneath 1-31, with three square-section, shaped feet, in the original octagonal pale blue cloth-lined morocco case with decorative eight-pointed star impressed on the lid with decorative surround, the interior of the lid with a brass and gilt-brass calendar scale, the volvelle graduated 1-12 (x2) with index to read off scales 1-12 (x2) and 1-29½ -- 3in.
