A George II japanned longcase clock, circa 1740
The case with stepped top hood with rectangular glazed side panels (one lacking), gilt decorated on a black ground, with pilasters to the front of the hood with gilt-painted capitals, the breakarch trunk door with moulded frame and decorated with chinoiserie figures and pagodas, with conforming decoration to the plinth with later stepped base, the 11in. brass dial with bird and urn spandrels to the silvered Roman chapter ring with Arabic five minutes, signed Rob.t Gymer Norwich, matted centre with date aperture, later and black painted hands, formerly also with centre seconds hand, the tapering arch with finely engraved hatched border decoration and orbs engraved with a city and a globe respectively, painted rolling moon with silvered band showing age, the five pillar rack striking movement with anchor escapement (bell lacking); possibly associated -- 90in. (229cm.) high
