On a square base with incurved corners with fluted center, applied with four Royal monograms, each Order of the Garter enclosing the monogram AEA, surmounted by a crown, the octagonal baluster stem with portrait busts of Sir Isaac Newton, Lord Bacon, Shakespeare, and James Watt, above strapwork panels, surmounted by ram's heads at the corners, the lower scroll branches chased with foliage with pendant laurel tassels, with detachable leaf-clad upper branch, the sockets with fluted bases, the wax-pans with cherub heads at the corners, fully marked, two cylindrical nozzles 1866 and 1874, also stamped R. AND S. GARRARD, PANTON STREET LONDON

Lot Essay

The Royal monogram is that of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900), second son of Queen Victoria.

A suite of three five-light candelabra and six candlesticks of identical design by Robert Garrard, 1866/67, are in the collection of Queen Elizabeth II. The suite is illustrated in A. G. Grimwade, The Queen's Silver, 1953, pl. 56.
