Lot Essay

The interlocking design of these backs is based on a design for 'Chinese Chairs' published in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754, pl.XXV and again in the third edition, 1763, pl.XXVIII. A set of four chairs (and a settee) which correspond exactly to the Chippendale pattern with pierced fretwork legs are in the Lady Lever Art Gallery (illustrated in A.Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, New York, 1968, pl.196). Chippendale considered these chairs 'very proper for a Lady's Dressing-Room; especially if it is hung with India paper...They have commonly can bottoms, with loose cushions'.
