Lot Essay

Born in 1846, Giovan Battista Gamba studied at the Academy of Brera in Milan under Vincenzo Vela. He produced decorative sculpture for various palazzi in Bergamo, Rome and Nice, and also specialised in free-standing marble sculpture. Inspired by Vela's realism in sculpture, Gamba exhibited widely in Italy during the 1870s and 1880s.
