Lot Essay

The inscription, in crude lettering, reads: al-'izz wa'l-iqbal w'al-yumn , al-salama w'al-sa'ada , al-d[aw]la wa ........ li-sahibihi (glory, prosperity, good fortune, peace, happiness, wealth and ........ to the owner).

This most unusual item, with very highly burnished mirror surface, can be dated to no later than the fourteenth century due to the form and content of the benedictory inscription around the rim. The style of script, albeit somewhat crude, is also consistent with the suggested attribution. Items made of steel, other than weapons, from this period are extremely unusual.
