A PAIR OF FATIMID SILVER ARMLETS
Egypt or Syria, 11th/12th Century
Of tubular construction, the shank worked in repoussé with seven lozenge medallions interspersed with floral motifs, the five central medallions with musicians playing different instruments between external part-lozenges with two addorsed birds looking over their shoulder, near the clasp two friezes with tear-drop motifs and beaded bands, on the sides a frame of semi-circular motifs, small breaks near the clasp

Lot Essay

A pair of similar armlets are in the al-Sabah Collection in Kuwait (Trésors Fatimides du Caire, exhibition catalogue, Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, 1998, p. 131, no.68), while another pair is in the L.A. Mayer Memorial Institute for Islamic Art (Hasson R.: Early Islamic Jewellery, Jerusalem, 1987, p.71, no. 85). The same technique has been also used for golden jewellery (Brosh, N.: Islamic Jewelry, Jerusalem, 1987, p. 18, no. 12: an example in the Musée du Louvre).
