The sitter was the son of Arnold van Soeteren en Margaretha van Lyckraedt tot den Greevel. His wife was the daughter of Franciscus von Hien and Anna Sarts.

The tentative attribution has been kindly suggested by Dr Wolfgang Schulz (oral information), after inspection of the originals on 13 March 2001.
