A 17th Century silver medal after Giovanni da Cavino, a 16th Century numismatologist from Padua who made numerous replicas of Roman sesterii. The model after which the present medal was made, is based on antique coins from the fourth century before Christ, Roman Imperial Bronze Coins and Greek Bronze Coins from Trace and Asia Minor. The Greek text on the obverse reads: "Artemissia Basilissa" (Queen Artemissia). Queen Artemissia was a Greek queen who lived c. 350 BC. The text on the reverse reads "Mausoleion", which refers to the mausoleum in Halicarnassus. The image of the woman on the obverse is possibly borrowed from depictions of the goddess Demeter, like for example the Demeter of Knidos. The present medal is identical to the original bronze medal Cavino made c. 1550, however the present one is executed in silver. The interior holds a portrait of a man, Frisian, c. 1630-1640, and may possibly be attributed to the circle of the Academy of Franeker.
