Lot Essay

Each Speedmaster Professional model in the special 40th anniversary series shows on its dial - at 9 o'clock - one of the official patches from NASA's first manned space missions, from the August 1965 Gemini to the Skylab SL-4 mission of 16 November 1973.

These patches relate the adventure of space exploration in which the Speedmaster Professional - the only watch worn on the Moon - was involved. The Speedmaster made six round-trips to the Moon: from the first man on the Moon, Neil Armstrong on July 21, 1969 at 02:56 GMT, to the last, Apollo 17 commander Gene Cernan.

Today on its way to Mars, Omega has introduced the new Speedmaster X-33 (see lot 39) which is now standard equipment for NASA Space Shuttle flights as well as for the Russian MIR.
