Lot Essay

Driver William Mercer is shown on the published rolls as being entitled to an 11-clasp Medal but with the 'St. Sebastian' and 'Nive' clasps in place of those for 'Corunna' and 'Busaco'. Possibly his known attachment to Bull's 'I' Troop, R.H.A. from 'E' Troop, Royal Artillery Drivers, caused some confusion at the issuing office. The former Troop won an 'Honour Title' for the courageous part it played at the Battle of Fuentes D'Onor under Captain Norman Ramsay.
