John Cook served as an Ordinary Seaman aboard H.M.S. Pompée in the action against the Franco-Spanish Squadron in the Gut of Gibraltar on 12.7.1801; 11 men with these names appear on the Naval General Service Medal roll, six of whom were entitled to the 'Syria' clasp.
