Brevet Major Joseph Gore Ryves was born in 1831 and, having passed out of Addiscombe, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Madras Sappers and Miners in June 1849. He became 2nd Captain in August 1858, Major by Brevet in June 1869 and died at Madras on 29.7.1871, aged 40 years.
