Lot Essay

Lieutenant Rowland Formby Jermyn was born in Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire in 1824 and attended the Naval Academy in Leadenhall Street, London studying navigation and nautical astronomy. Joining the Honourable East India Company's Service in 1839, he served as a Midshipman aboard Sesostris in the China Campaign. Appointed Lieutenant on the Moozuffer in 1847, he served as Senior Lieutenant aboard the Zenobia in the Pegu Campaign of 1852-53. Jermyn retired from the Service in 1856.
