Lot Essay

Colonel Charles Bailey was born in December 1862 and was originally commissioned into the Royal Scots Fusiliers from the Militia in November 1884. Subsequently gaining appointment to the Indian Staff Corps, he served with the 26th Bengal Infantry in the Burma operations of 1885-87, and was employed in the 2nd Brigade, Lower Burma Field Force, in the Shwegyn District. Advanced to Captain in November 1895, Bailey witnessed further active service in South Africa while attached to Kitchener's Horse between February and May 1900, and was present at Paardeberg, in addition to the actions at Poplar Grove, Driefontein and Karee Siding. Returning to India, he gained advancement to Major in November 1902 and had attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel by the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914. Bailey was Mentioned in Despatches for services in the Great War (London Gazette 30.6.1916 refers), and was placed on the Retired List as a full Colonel in October 1919.
