Corporal John Edward Wallace, who was from Leeds, was born in October 1911 and enlisted in the Duke of Wellington's Regiment in November 1931. Placed on the Reserve after service on the North West Frontier in the mid-1930s, he was recalled on the outbreak of hostilities and joined the Royal Army Medical Corps as a Nursing Orderly. Subsequently advanced to Corporal and attached to the 1st Malay Field Ambulance, he was taken Prisoner of War by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore in February 1942. Wallace was latterly incarcerated in a P.O.W. camp in Tokyo and was lucky to survive moebic dysentery (Accompanying research refers).
