A RARE AND FINE SAMPLER
POSSIBLY GERMAN, 1707
of white linen, worked in coloured silks with a fountain within a landscape flanked by two shepherdesses , the centre with a medallion worked in fine metal threads and coloured silks, monogrammed LBM beneath a coronet above the date 1707, all in seed pearls, surrounded by spot motifs of finely worked flowers, a basket of flowers, a pear, an apple, moths, a peacock, the letters of the alphabet, to the base with darning samples --19 x 14in. (48.5 x 35.5cm.), possibly professional, framed and glazed, mounted on a walnut pole screen, the turned baluster column on splayed tripod supports terminating in claw and ball feet, circa 1900

There is a very similar sampler dated 1704 in the National Museum, Nuremburg, Inv. GEW 2677a (50.5 x 42cm.). Dr. Leonie von Wilckens discovered the design in a Nuremberg pattern book dated 1704
