An early 19th Century scrimshaw decorated whale's tooth box
the hollowed tooth-end incised with several scenes including King Neptune seated in a chariot drawn by seahorses, a Jack Tar and his lady beside a church with a rose, eye and letter being delivered by a bird above them, a whaling scene and others, entitled HOPE, the lid/base with inset silver ¼ dollar dated 1821 surrounded by further motifs and a banner with the name S.A. Beer, the rim inscribed A PRESENT FROM MY BROTHER, and a man half consumed by a monster -- 2¼in. (5.7cm.) high
