by Jean-Joseph Barrière (fl. 1763-1793), marked, Paris, 1774/1775, with the charge and discharge marks of Jean-Baptiste Fouache
Oval box, the cover, base and four side panels enamelled with translucent grey on an engine-turned scalloped ground forming a vertical coin pattern, within reeded gold borders, the cover centred with an oval enamel plaque painted in sepia and colours with a lady seated by a table in a landscape and reading a book, being disturbed by the arrival of Cupid, framed by a reeded gold mount, within broad white enamel borders adorned by a taille d'épargne ribbon-twist band enclosing alternating flowerheads and laurel, the four side pilasters similarly enamelled in white and chased with twisted ribbons enclosing a translucent dark blue enamelled swirling rosette flanked by two shells
