The inscription translates: "Oh God, most gracious most merciful
Oh living, self subsisting eternal God,
Full of majesty, bounty and honour,
There is no God but Allah
Mohammed is the Prophet of Allah
Mohammed al Mahdi is Allah's Prophet's deputy"
Said to have been carried by the Mahdist army at the seige of Khartoum, 18th March 1884.
