the linen ground with two parallel panels worked with geometric patterning in saffron and mustard yellow silks, each panel centred with three appliqué stars of purple velvet embroidered with gilt and silver threads, each end worked with a square of brightly coloured stylised flowers, Chaouen, late 19th century--192cm x 200cm

These embroideries were made for ceremonial occaisions and used both as wallhangings, borders for bedcovers, mattress covers and covers for wooden chests. An earlier example of very similar design is illustrated in Maroc, Les Trésors du Royaume, from the exhibition at the Petit Palais, Paris, 1999, no 376, page 202.
