Although Josiah Wedgwood was certainly in contact with Catherine II, having delivered the famous Frog Service to her in 1774, his firm does not appear to have ever executed her portrait in jasperware. Despite the impressed mark on the back of the present roundel, it is unlikely to have been made by Wedgwood. It may have been executed by a rival English firm, or perhaps one on the Continent.
