A 13-inch (33cm.) diameter terrestrial globe made up of twelve chromolithographed gores and two polar calottes, the equatorial graduated in degrees, the prime meridian running through Iceland and graduated in degrees, secondary latitude lines in red for the meridian of Greenwich, graduated at the North Pole in degrees, the ecliptic graduated but unlabelled, the oceans showing ocean currents, steamship routes and submarine cables, the Antarctic with no record of the Amundsen or Scott expeditions, the continents with nation states variously coloured and showing railways, towns, cities, rivers, mountains and the Great Wall of China, the North Pole with details of various expeditions, culminating in Peary's in 1902 (some general discolouration) with (later) stamped brass meridian circle, horizon and two quadrant supports, raised atop a stooped cast bronze figure of Hercules, draped in the skin of the Nemean lion, standing atop a rocky plinth base impressed with J.D. Thomas SOUTHAMPTON 1859 JUNE 1 -- 34½in. (87.6cm.) high
