Alderney Manor on the Wimborne estate in Dorset was the home of the artist's family between June 1911 and March 1927. In a letter to Lytton Strachey of 24 July 1911, Henry Lamb wrote 'She [Dorelia] lives in an amazing place - a vast secluded park of prairies, pine woods, birch woods, dells and moors with a house, cottages and a circular walled-garden' (see M. Holroyd, Augustus John, London, 1996, pp. 359-60).
