Lot Essay

The present work is typical of Meninsky's paintings and drawings of heavy limbed women in repose. It can be compared with one of the artist's illustrations for Milton's L'Allegro and Il Penseroso, published in 1946 (see J. Russell Taylor, Bernard Meninsky, Bristol, 1990, pp. 83 and 106).
