Sir Lawrence Evelyn Jones (1885-1969), the previous owner of this painting, was the author of a series of reminiscences: An Edwardian Youth (1956); Georgian Afternoon (1958); and A Victorian Boyhood (1965). He was a keen collector of Nicholson's work, and sold four paintings by Nicholson at Christie's in 1968: the present work; Iris, Tindle Tarn (lot 11); Seascale, and Hôtel Rue Brae, Paris.
The abstract geometrical composition on the reverse relates to a number of such works produced by the artist during the 1930s. Often flower paintings from a slighty later date are painted on the other side of the board, as in the present work.
