The date and signature were probably added between 1943 and 1951, by another hand. Nicholson spent several summer holidays in Dieppe between 1903 and 1908, and his last holiday inspired La Place de Petit Enfer, Dieppe (L. Browse, op. cit., no. 49) a work which, like this, showed the influence of his friend James Pryde. The church was a popular subject with artists, including Sickert and Pissarro (see following lot).
