Lot Essay

A view of the south door of the church of St Jacques, seen down La Rue Pecquet, Dieppe. Sickert painted this view many times, in a series of pictures from 1899-1900 and again in 1906-08. The later pictures are identifiable from the earlier series by the inclusion of a small tree seen at the top of the street, and the railings of a fence running across part of the portal. In the later series Sickert applied thick, impasted paint and the colour tones are brighter (see W. Baron, loc. cit.).
