Lot Essay

Poynter worked on the designs from 1866-74 and women artists from the National Art Training School painted the designs onto blank tiles supplied by Minton. The months and season are shown on large tiled panels, beneath which are smaller bands of tiles painted with landscapes and subjects from classical mythology. This room according to the Standard was '... the most successful in point of decoration, of the entire group.' The present drawings appear to relate to studies for the months October (illustrated), November and January. We are grateful to Dr Alison Inglis for her help preparing this catalogue entry.
