Lot Essay

In the 1970s Nicholson made a number of drawing trips to the Yorkshire Dales. Norbert Lynton (Ben Nicholson, London, 1998, pp. 107-8) comments, 'He was rediscovering his native land. In his new drawings of it there is a hint of the softness found in his landscape drawings of the 1920s, related to conditions of light and weather at least as much as to mood. Tonal smudges ... join with sharper touches to produce a richer as well as a gentler image, more redolent of a particular mood and more inclusive in the perception they reveal'.

The present work shows Hubberholme and the church of St Michael's in Upper Wharfdale.
