Lot Essay

The inscription composed by the emperor Qianlong, which appears on other wall vases, may be translated:

Guan wares and those of Ruzhou are famous classes
[of ceramics],
Yet the shapes of the new wares are even more admirable.
This hanging vase inspires the traveler both to sing,
And to gather flowers by the wayside.
A sedan chair is indeed a suitable place for it to be hung,
As over its side wild flowers incline so approprately.
The red dust [of mortal world] is barred from entrance,
But fragrance can penetrate the gauze of the window blind.

It is rare to find a moulded ground on a wall vase of this distinctive type and with a four-character sealmark. Compare the examples illustrated in For the Imperial Court, Qing Porcelain from the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, Singapore, 1997, p. 52, no. 3 and in Chinese Porcelain, The S.C. Ko Tianminlou Collection, vol. II, p. 159, pl. 116.

A small incense burner with a moulded and robin's egg ground is illustrated in the Special Exhibition of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong Porcelain, Taipei, 1986, Catalogue, p. 172, no. 145.
