Lot Essay

This service was made for the family of Pott of Bentham, Kent and was made for the father of the member of the Pott family, whose service bore the arms of Pott quartering Clarke and impaling Monro. See D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, 1974, p.583 for the latter service. A tureen stand from this service is in the Hodroff Collection and illustrated by David S. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, 1994, p.109, no.104. Two dishes identical to the present lot were sold in these Rooms, 30 and 31 March 1983, lots 238 and 239, together with an even larger dish of this shape as lot 237, and further dishes as lots 241 and 242. In lot 243 of the same sale, a similarly-shaped dish for the son's service was sold, and in June 1957 120 piece of that service were sold in these Rooms.
