Lot Essay

The arms are those of Francis I, Duke of Lorraine, who married Maria Teresa, Queen of Bohemia and Hungary. He became Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1737 and Holy Roman Emperor (and of Austria) in 1745. This service must have been made after he became a Grand Duke but before he became Holy Roman Emperor. A similar plate was sold in these Rooms, 1 November 1993, lot 134.
