BREVIARY, Dominican use - Breviarium praedicatorum. Venice: Lucantonio Giunta, 28 June 1516.

4° (236 x 170mm). Collation: *8 **12 a-b8 c-d12 e-g8 h-z12 \\i \\j \\g12 aa-ee12 ff8 hh8 ii-mm12 nn10. Printed in red and black, gothic type, double column. Vignette of St. Dominic and Giunta device on title, 13 large woodcuts, numerous small woodcuts, and woodcut initials, ALL COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, the large cuts and their opposing pages set within a border of alternate text and small cuts. (Without final blank, one blank corner repaired.) Contemporary German, probably Nuremberg binding [cf. Schunke-Schwenke, Laubstab 288 = Kyriss shop 120], blindtooled panelled calf, central panel and spine with lattice panel and floral tool, floral rolls, two brass fore-edge clasps (endpapers renewed, splits in lower spine compartment).

A vividly coloured copy of a Breviary for Dominican use (see frontispiece illustration). The woodcuts had previously appeared in Giunta's edition of the same work, published on 28 September 1508. There is some confusion over the collation of this edition, almost certainly arising from an error in the printed foliation, which jumps from f. 360 to 377 without any apparent omission of text. Essling and Sander call for a quire gg of 12 leaves, yet they omit it from their page counts, and Bohatta notes the error, but calls for quite a different and not wholly comprehensible collation at the end (aa-dd12 ee8 gg bis mm12 nn10). All three authorities call for 20 preliminary leaves, followed by 426, as the present copy. Bohatta 1668; Essling 980; Sander 1329.
