A fine copy printed on vellum, one of the three undated editions printed by Plantin. The most prestigious chivalric order, the Order of the Golden Fleece was founded in 1429 by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, to commemorate his marriage to Isabella of Portugal. The knights vowed to join their sovereign in the defence of the Catholic faith, the protection of the Holy Church, and the upholding of virtue and good morals. This copy was owned by Jean-François Désiré, a contemporary knight of the Order. His forebear, Engelbert, had also been a knight of the Order, having been elected in 1473. Brunet IV, 211; Van Praet Roi V, 158. (2)
