FIRST EDITION. Arguably Jane Austen's greatest novel, Emma was begun on 21 January 1814 and finished in a little over a year on 29 March 1815. Following her visit to Carlton House, it was dedicated to the Prince Regent at the suggestion of the Prince's librarian, and published at her own expense, with profits to the author after payment of a 10 commission to John Murray. The work encountered printing delays, and advertisements did not appear for it until late December, 1815. The edition was of 2000 copies, issued in boards at 21 shillings. 1248 copies had been sold by October 1816 with a profit to Jane Austen of £221.6.4. Volumes I-II were printed by Roworth in a Caslon Pica roman, and volume III by Moyes in a slightly earlier version of the same type. The novel was exported to America; Mathew Carey of Philadelphia was in 1818 selling copies of the London edition at $4, besides his own Philadelphia edition of the same novel. Gilson A8; Keynes p. 14; Sadleir I, 62d. (3)
