Small 2° in 4's, mezzotint frontispiece portrait by J. Smith after Sir Peter Lely, without correction slip on p. 438 (frontispiece with crease mark, short clean paper flaw affecting headline and 2 letters of first line of text on L2, another flaw in lower margin, verso of final leaf soiled), contemporary calf, spine decorated gilt in 5 compartments, lettering-piece in another (head of spine chipped, spine slightly worn, joints starting to crack); sprinkled edges.

FIRST EDITION. "At the foot of the last page are the words 'The End of the First Volume'. In some copies a slip is pasted over this inscription bearing the words 'The End'. It was undoubtedly the publishers' first intention to issue a second volume ... but for some reason the publication was delayed until 1728, when it appeared in a different form" (Grolier). Jackson describes the portrait of Wycherley at the age of 28 as "one of the most famous of literary mezzotints". Grolier From Wither to Prior 1085; Hayward 138; Pforzheimer 1101.
