HORATIUS FLACCUS, Quintus (65-8 B.C.). Opera, London: John Pine, 1733-1737.

2 volumes, 8°, all-engraved by John Pine, with frontispieces, title vignettes, 8 full-page illustrations, culs-de-lampe, and 4-line opening initial to each poem (variable light spotting and browning), CONTEMPORARY GREEN ENGLISH MOROCCO GILT, sides with star-and-oval roll tool border, smooth spines in six compartments, two directly-lettered, the others tooled with repeated lozenges containing a central rosette, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, pink silk markers (extremities lightly rubbed, a few minor scuff marks). Provenance: Mr. Chel. de Cressia, Captain of the Regiment of Navarre (contemporary French engraved armorial bookplate by J. Striedbeck); L. Froissart (bookplate of ca. 1900).

AN ATTRACTIVELY-BOUND EXAMPLE OF THE SOLE EDITION, second issue with "Potest" correctly engraved around the Caesar medal (vol. II, p. 108), without the printed list of antiquities in one of the three Rothschild copies. Pine's Horace is well-known as one of the great all-engraved works with a total of some 324 illustrations and 164 initials, here found in a morocco binding of equal elegance.
